Excursions along the north coast of Mallorca: the Tramuntana mountain range
The Serra de Tramuntana is a UNESCO World Heritage Site in the category of cultural landscape and is one of Mallorca’s greatest natural treasures.
It stretches along the north-western part of Mallorca and is approximately 90 kilometres long.
It is considered to be the backbone of the island.
It stretches from Pollença, in the extreme north, to Andratx, in the extreme south, and occupies 30 percent of the island’s territory.
The Serra de Tramuntana is a clear example of an exchange of knowledge between different cultures.
In its mountains, Islamic and western cultures have coexisted for centuries, and there are still ancient irrigation systems and dry stone terraces built to cultivate agricultural products in a difficult environment.
The Serra de Tramuntana has two water reservoirs, Gorg Blau and Cúber, and the highest mountain in the Balearic Islands, Puig Major, 1,445 metres high.
Other higher mountains are Teix, Puig Tomir and Massanella.
Special mention should be made of the Biniaraix ravine which is a marvellous area to discover on an excursion that will take you to the foot of l’Ofre.
The Biniaraix ravine runs along a stone path where the hiker will be amazed by the architecture and the landscape that runs between centenary olive trees.

Discovering the Serra de Tramuntana is one of the essential activities if the traveller wants to savour the authenticity of the island.
One way to do this is to it walking.
There are different routes with different levels of difficulty, depending on the hiker’s experience.
The Dry-stone Route is an 8-stage route that runs from north to south along the Tramuntana.
Here you have the opportunity to discover another side of Mallorca and to pass through old paths and typical stone buildings set in olive groves.
Another great attraction is, precisely, the enormous and robust olive trees that are hundreds of years old and have an incalculable historical and cultural value for the island.

The most beautiful and picturesque villages of the island are located on the north coast of Mallorca; villages rich in history and tradition that still seem rooted in the past.

The Serra de Tramuntana is the favourite place for the thousands of cyclists who, year after year, visit Mallorca to cycle around the Island.
The most popular areas among cyclists are Formentor road (which runs between the sea, the mountains and extraordinary vegetation) and Sa Calobra road, where we find the world-famous section of “el nudo de la corbata” (the tie–knot) – one of the tightest bends in the world.
Both routes lead to beautiful beaches: Formentor and Sa Calobra and the Torrent de Pareis, where people can refresh themselves by swimming in crystalline waters or drinking in the beautiful scenery.
Doing any of the numerous routes that can be done through the Serra de Tramuntana by bicycle is one of the biggest attractions for tourists who visit Mallorca, either as a couple, with friends, individually or with the family.
